Cool Summer Treats - Northern Kentucky - Cutler Real Estate

Summer means warmer temperatures, which are mostly a good thing. But when it gets too hot and you want to cool off, ordering a milkshake or iced coffee can help you chill out. Fortunately, Northern Kentucky has several great locations serving up these cold drinks near Boone County homes for sale. Many also serve food items, so you can enjoy a burger with your milkshake or a pastry with your coffee, and you'll even be able to order a boozy milkshake if you'd like to, although it's also available without the alcohol.

When you're ready to cool off and treat yourself, head to one of the following seven places to order a milkshake or iced coffee in Northern Kentucky.

Fillmore's Dairy Hut

7500 Burlington Pike, Florence, KY 41042

A nostalgic staple of Florence for years, Fillmore's Dairy Hut is the type of place that adults fondly remember going to as kids with their parents or heading to after school or a sporting event, and now they're returning with their own kids. Order a burger, footlong cheese coney topped with homemade Cincinnati-style chili, or other traditional favorite with your milkshake, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the reasonable prices. Milkshakes come in flavors, including strawberry, blueberry, chocolate chip, butterscotch, and peanut butter.

Graeter's Ice Cream

301 Buttermilk Pike, Fort Mitchell, KY 41017

Graeter's Ice Cream traces its roots back to 1870 in Cincinnati when its founder began selling ice cream from two carts. At the time, it was hand-crafted in French pots. Ice cream is the all-important base of any great milkshake, and the fourth-generation family-owned company still makes it in a French pot freezer that leaves very little trapped air. The result is indulgent, delicious ice cream that translates into the same qualities in their milkshakes. Try a refreshing peach shake in the summer, or create your own from one of the shop's many flavors, including black raspberry chocolate chip and brown butter bourbon pecan. You'll have your choice of a 16-ounce small milkshake, a 20-ounce medium, or a 24-ounce large.

Mad Mike's Burgers & Fries

6420 Dixie Hwy., Florence, KY 41042

Mad Mike's Burgers & Fries serves up fresh, made-to-order burgers, and you can build your own or order a gourmet burger made with a half-pound of 100% black Angus beef. The Rockefeller burger—served with blue cheese crumbles, mango chutney, beer-battered onion strings, cilantro may, and lettuce—is a customer favorite. Have some hand-cut french fries along with your burger, and treat yourself to a milkshake with your meal. You can choose from flavors including cookies and cream, chocolate chip cookie, espresso vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate.

Nomad

225 Fairfield Ave., Bellevue, KY 41073

A post shared by NOMAD (@nomad.ky)

A bar may not be the first destination you think of when you're craving a milkshake, but Nomad serves an impressive list of boozy concoctions made with three ounces of alcohol. If you'd rather not have the alcohol, all shakes are also available in non-boozy versions. Try versions like Dough You Want Me Baby, consisting of ice cream, Ghirardelli caramel sauce, edible cookie dough, and vanilla vodka. The decadent shake is topped with whipped cream, a house-made cookie, chocolate chips, and a cherry. Or order the Oops! I Split It Again, Nomad's take on a banana split. It has ice cream blended with vanilla vodka, Frangelico, Ghirardelli chocolate, and banana split-inspired ingredients like bananas, walnuts, and cherries.

Jet Coffee

8203 U.S. 42, Florence, KY 41042

With its double drive-thru lanes, Jet Coffee quickly lets you cool off and fuel up with an iced coffee before or after work, school, or running errands. Coffee drinks are available hot or iced, including the butterscotch and rum Highlander Grogg brewed coffee. Specialty lattes, which can even be ordered frozen with whipped cream, include interesting flavors such as Flower Power with lavender and honey and Raspberry Truffle with raspberry and dark chocolate. Frappes are also frozen with whipped cream and include caramel and spiced or vanilla chai.

Enlightenment Coffee

11069 Clay Dr., Walton, KY 41094

Enlightenment Cafe is a welcoming community gathering spot that's the perfect place to meet some friends and catch up over coffee. Its coffee beans are equitably sourced and locally roasted by Carabello Coffee for quality and freshness. Cool off with an iced coffee, including a latte, mocha, chocolate Americano with almond and oat milk, bourbon caramel frappe, or white chocolate raspberry frappe. And while you're sipping your coffee, enjoy a house-made baked good, breakfast burrito, or bagel along with it.

Dreamy Whip

3020 Washington St., Burlington, KY 41005

At Dreamy Whip, you can have your choice of the best of both worlds: a milkshake or an iced coffee. If you're in the mood for a shake, try a chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, peanut butter, or banana variety. And if you'd rather cool off with an iced coffee, try an affogato, which combines ice cream and espresso, or order a frosted coffee. The shop also has food trucks that are dispatched across the area, so check their Facebook page linked above to see a schedule of their next locations.

Sip, Sip, Hooray!

Which is your favorite drink to cool off: a milkshake or an iced coffee?

Carousels - Explore Ohio - Cutler Real Estate

While modern carousels are a beloved amusement ride, they have their roots in a combat preparation exercise from the Middle Ages. Knights attempted to spear small rings hanging overhead as they galloped in a circle. Commoners eventually adapted the game with the beginnings of our current form.

Did you know that the first carousel in the United States was built in the 1840s by Franz Wiesenhoffer in Hessville, OH? Our state is still recognized as the home of many incredible carousels, including those in Northeast Ohio, Columbus, and Cincinnati.

Cedar Point

1 Cedar Point Dr., Sandusky, OH 44870

Everyone knows that carousels are a traditional part of any respectable fair, carnival, and amusement park. Not surprisingly, Cedar Point takes their carousel game to a whole new level, with three carousels that make frequent appearances on top-10 lists. The Kiddy Kingdom Carousel, dating back to 1925 and features 52 animals, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Next is the Midway Carousel, built in 1912 and operating at Cedar Point since 1946, making it the park's oldest ride. Finally, challenge family and friends to a spin on the Cedar Downs Racing Derby, one of only two racing carousels in the United States. Visit the website for hours and ticket pricing.

Richland Carrousel Park

75 N. Main St., Mansfield, OH 44902

In honor of the ride's European origins, Richland Carrousel Park uses the French spelling of the word in its name. This delightful park features the first new hand-carved carousel constructed in the United States since the 1930s, built at nearby Carousel Works. Scenery panels on the carousel depict Malabar Farm, Richland County Courthouse, and other iconic locations and notable figures from the local area. Carousel rides are $1, with discounts for purchases of 6 or 50 rides. Hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday.

Akron Zoo

505 Euclid Ave., Akron, OH 44307

Environmental education and awareness provide the theme for the Conservation Carousel at the Akron Zoo. The hand-carved figurines are likenesses of 33 animals from around the world, ranging from a ladybug and a penguin to a Komodo dragon, a peacock chariot that's wheelchair accessible, and a baby moose that contains a time capsule from 2010. Sustainable wood, repurposed concrete, and other green initiatives were incorporated in the construction of the carousel. Rides are $2 per person. Zoo admission is $14 for adults and $11 for ages 2-14. Hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily through October 31. Visit the website for seasonal hours.

Columbus Commons

160 S. High St., Columbus, OH 43215

In 2011, the historic City Center grounds were transformed into Columbus Commons, a 6-acre park in the midst of the beautiful downtown area. The centerpiece attraction is a hand-carved carousel with 18 charming figurines, including the OSU Buckeye horse, a frog prince, and a clown fish. Ohio Stadium and Franklin Park Conservatory are two of the hand-painted scenes decorating the canopy. Carousel rides are also a popular draw for Commons for Kids, held each Friday through August 12 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Rides are free at all times. Park hours are 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. daily.

Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

3400 Vine St., Cincinnati, OH 45220

Carousels are generally thought of as rides for youngsters. That's not the case at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, where their Conservation Carousel is one of the more popular attractions during adults-only events such as Toast of the Wild. Of course, the carousel is a big hit with kids as well. Zoo members often upgrade their memberships at the prompting of their children, who like the unlimited carousel rides that are included. Standard pricing for rides is $3. Mark your calendar for 2023, when the zoo's new carousel will be installed. At twice the size of the current carousel, this version will feature 65 animals in a vintage open-air gazebo perched alongside Swan Lake. Admission ranges from $9.50-$25. The zoo is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. through October 31. Visit the website for seasonal hours.

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

4850 Powell Rd., Powell, OH 43065

After viewing real birds and wildlife in person, check out colorful recreations on the Grand Carousel at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The historic 1914 Mangels-Illions carousel revolves to the sounds of a fully restored band organ that plays periodically throughout the day. Rides are $2 per person. If you want the real experience, enjoy a camel ride for $7 or a pony ride for $5. Zoo admission is $16.99 for adults and $11.99 for ages 3-9. Prices are higher for non-Franklin County residents. The zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. through August. Visit the website for seasonal hours.

Toledo Zoo & Aquarium

2 Hippo Way, Toledo, OH 43609

Travel to the continent of Africa on the carousel at the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium. The sole African carousel in the world lets you ride atop 42 exotic animals, such as giraffes, zebras, and gorillas. Artwork on the canopy showcases many of the featured animals in their native habitats. Rides are $3 per person, with passes available for multiple rides at discounted rates. Zoo admission is $24 for adults and $21 for ages 2-11, with an additional $2 charge for non-Lucas County residents. Visit the website for hours.

Merry-Go-Round Museum

301 Jackson St., Sandusky, OH 44870

Inspiration for the Merry-Go-Round Museum came from a series of carousel stamps issued by the U.S. Postal Service in 1988. Appropriately, the museum is housed in a former Sandusky Post Office building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to watching activities in the restoration shop, visitors can ride the museum's vintage 1939 Allan Herschell carousel as the band organ plays the classic "oom-pa-pa" sounds. The original figurines were unavailable, so the carousel is populated with pieces from the museum's collection or on loan from private collectors. Admission, including one ride token, is $6 for adults and $4 for ages 4-14. Hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon - 4 p.m. Sunday through Labor Day.

Round and Round

When it comes to your preferred carousel mount, do you go old-school with the horses, or do you make a dash for one of the other animals?

Rainy Summer Day Activities - Cincinnati, OH - Cutler Real Estate

Now that summer is upon us, there are many outdoor activities that families can enjoy together, such as biking, hiking, picnics, sports, and more. But what happens when the sun goes away, and rain clouds appear? Being stuck inside playing video games and watching movies sounds like fun, but there are so many other things to do.

Cincinnati is chock-full of exciting places to visit, and many of them are perfect for a rainy summer day. We can't list them all, but we've compiled a list of our favorites found in Cincinnati and the surrounding areas we're sure will surprise and delight your entire family.

American Sign Museum

1330 Monmouth Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45225

There's little doubt that the American Sign Museum will be one of the most unique attractions you'll visit in the Cincinnati area. Although the art and history of signs and sign-making might not seem like something kids would enjoy, we think they'll love the spinning signs, flashing lights, and pop culture imagery. This is a great way for kids and adults to learn about something that's just a little unusual.

Castle Skateland

980 Loveland Madeira Rd., Loveland, OH 45140

Even though roller rinks may not be as trendy as they used to be, they continue to be a fun time for kids and adults. Castle Skateland is a family-owned and operated place of entertainment and features the largest skate floor in the greater Cincinnati Tri-State area. Its bright and friendly atmosphere will be very welcoming on a rainy day, and you can also treat your kids to a variety of music, arcade games, food, and drinks.

Arcade Legacy

662 Cincinnati Mills Dr., Cincinnati, OH 45240

While your kids probably have plenty of console games at home, you simply can't beat a good, old-fashioned arcade. With more than 60 arcade games and pinball machines, gaming console stations, and giant projection screens, the only bad thing about Arcade Legacy is that your kids might not want to leave. You can also check out the media store, where you'll find movies, comic books, board games, action figures, artwork, and other collectibles.

Mosaic Climbing

9501 Union Cemetery Rd., Loveland, OH 45140

Nothing says summer fun quite like expending some of that built-up energy that every child seems to have at all times. Mosaic Climbing provides an exciting indoor adventure for kids and adults of all ages. If you've never been there before, that's perfectly fine. You'll go through a short orientation and be given access to different climbing areas designed for a variety of skill levels and ages.

Recreations Outlet

885 OH-28, Milford, OH 45150

We're going to cheat a little by adding the Recreations Outlet to our list because it's such an awesome place. They feature many outdoor activities like trampolines and playground equipment, but that won't help you when it's pouring outside. But they also offer several items perfect for creating an indoor game room, such as table tennis, foosball, and shuffleboard. This will give you an alternative to keeping kids inside only to watch them play video games all day.

Scene75

876 OH-28, Milford, OH 45150

Since being voted the top family entertainment center in the world, Scene75 has had a lot to live up to—and it never disappoints! There are more than a dozen indoor attractions, including go-karts, mini-golf, laser tag, bumper cars, mini-bowling, and a 4D motion theater. You'll also be treated to a huge game room with more than 100 arcade games, in addition to air hockey and several redemption games where you win tickets that can be exchanged for prizes.

Joseph-Beth Booksellers

2692 Madison Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45208

If you're looking for something a little low-key, you may want to head over to Joseph-Beth Booksellers. This is easily one of the best bookstores in Cincinnati and the surrounding communities. Parents and kids alike will be able to find plenty of books to choose from, including hugely popular favorites and a bunch of indie titles. In addition to a large selection of books, they also have games, toys, planners, puzzles, clothing, and a whole lot more.

Run Jump-n-Play

5897 Pfeiffer Rd. Suite B, Blue Ash, OH 45242

This huge indoor playground and party place is incredible. As soon as you and your kids walk into the Run Jump-n-Play facility, you can see their excitement build up as they gear up to start running around everywhere. The facility is filled with swing sets, basketball hoops, trampolines, and more. There's also a large area for birthday parties and other special events.

Carol Ann's Carousel

8 E. Mehring Way, Cincinnati, OH 45202

If you're looking for something simple but fun, head to Carol Ann's Carousel. Not only is this carousel an amazing work of art that features 44 different characters, it's simply a great way for children to have fun and relax. This carousel can stay open all year round because it's enclosed in glass, making it perfect for a rainy summer day. Your kids will even be able to watch the droplets hit the glass as they ride their favorite horse, tiger, or other animal.

Chase Away Rainy Day Blues

With so many incredible places to duck indoors and avoid the rain, where will you and your family choose to go?

Pair your choice with an order of boneless or bone-in chicken wings, available in 10 different sauces. Hours are 5 p.m. - 1 a.m. Wednesday through Friday and 11 a.m. - 1 a.m. weekends.

Quintana's Speakeasy

2200 S. Taylor Rd., Cleveland Heights, OH 44118

Just as the name promises, you'll feel like you're part of a secret club when visiting Quintana's Speakeasy. The first floor is a barber shop that's a throwback to the classic days of a place where customers make business deals and discuss sports. Head to the hidden bookcase passage in the back that leads upstairs to the bar. Be sure to order the Hemingway Daiquiri with light rum, lime and grapefruit juices, and Luxardo liqueur. Check the website for information about live music shows and special events such as "Prohibition 101 - Learn Hands-On Classic Craft Cocktails." Quintana's Speakeasy is open Tuesday through Saturday from 3 - midnight.

Don Ramon Mexican Restaurant

4866 Richmond Rd., Cleveland, OH 44128

Mexican restaurants might make you immediately think of Margaritas, but they also mix a mean daiquiri at Don Ramon. Choose from six different fruit flavors that come by the pint, jumbo-size, small pitcher, or large pitcher. The food menu features a wide range of traditional Mexican favorites, from nachos and fajitas to burritos and enchiladas. Customers love the spacious dining room with soft lighting, delightful Mexican music, and friendly servers. Hours are 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily except Sunday when closing time is 9 p.m.

Huli Huli Tiki Lounge & Bar

26 W. Olentangy St., Powell, OH 43065

The vibe at Huli Huli Tiki Lounge & Bar is so authentic that you'll feel the tropical breezes blowing through your hair. Part of the fun is the drink presentation, with colorful glasses holding traditional flowers and parasols. The pineapple daiquiri gets a little extra kick from spiced syrup. Try the signature Tiki fries, tossed in a house spice blend and topped with Kalua pork, Bang Bang sauce, and pineapple salsa. Watch their Facebook page for information about special rum tasting events. Huli Huli is open 4 - 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 4 - 10:30 p.m. Friday, 1 - 10:30 p.m. Saturday, and 1 - 9 p.m. Sunday.

Kai's Crab Boil

839 Bethel Rd., Columbus, OH 43214

Craft cocktails meet New England seafood at Kai's Crab Boil. Their namesake meals come with your choice of seafood, boiled in one of three different sauces and spiced in five levels, from "No Heat" to "OMG." Combos include two types of seafood and three add-ons, ideal for sharing. Daiquiris come in strawberry, pineapple, and mango, with three sizes available. Hours are 4 - 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 4 - 10 p.m. Friday, noon - 10 p.m. Saturday, and noon - 9 p.m. Sunday.

The Bar at Echo Spirits

985 W. 6th Ave., Columbus, OH 43212

Old-school cocktails get a contemporary update at The Bar at Echo Spirits. Founders Nikhil Sharoff and Joe Bidinger have a mission to create artisan spirits that honor history and flavor. The drinks are bestowed with charming names that are as inventive as the recipes. A Bell Through the Night is a daiquiri for "lovers of meadows and witchy things," made with Echo Spirits rum, jasmine cordial, honeysuckle, and lime. Need some time to decide? Order a Snaquiri, a miniature daiquiri made with bartender's choice. Feel free to bring in off-site food or purchase from one of the food trucks that are usually on hand. Hours are 4 p.m. - 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 4 p.m. - midnight Friday and Saturday, and 4 p.m. - 11 p.m. Sunday.

Lost & Found OTR

Hello Honey's cozy East Walnut Hills storefront has made a big splash in the neighborhood. They still make everything from scratch, right down to the vegan marshmallows brûléed with a mini-blowtorch. Creative flavors such as Berry Earl Grey, Honey Lavender, and Brown Butter Caramel rotate to take advantage of seasonal ingredients. Hello Honey is open Thursday through Sunday from 1 - 9 p.m.

Try one of their signature bowls, including options such as peanut butter and berry, or mix and match toppings to create your own. Nature Photography Destinations - Explore Ohio - Cutler Real Estate

Did you know that every June 15 is Nature Photography Day? While there's never a bad time to capture the natural beauty of Ohio, this day provides the perfect excuse to explore the scenery of your favorite communities and take some great photos in the process. Whether you're exploring glacial, urban waterfalls in Northeast Ohio, gorgeous gardens around Columbus, or an ancient, world-renowned historic site near Cincinnati, you're sure to capture something special. Start your photography journey with our guide to nine of the best places around Ohio to capture nature for Nature Photography Day.

Berea Falls Scenic Overlook

136 E. Bagley Rd., Berea, OH 44017

One of the cool things about Ohio cities is how opportunities for nature photography are seamlessly integrated into urban landscapes. The Berea Falls Scenic Overlook, located a short drive from the heart of Cleveland, is one great example. After the glaciers receded following the last ice age, melting water formed rivers that reshaped the landscape. The Berea Falls were created by water from the Rocky River, carved through the abundant sandstone around Berea. There's so much natural beauty to capture here, with a different look every season.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

6947 Riverview Rd., Peninsula, OH 44264

Also located a short drive from Cleveland is the vast Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which features some of the most spectacular scenery that you'll find anywhere in Ohio. The park is located around the Cuyahoga River, with a mix of forests, rolling meadows, and farmland, all connected with an extensive, well-maintained trail system. Brandywine Falls is one of the most popular natural sites within the park and a perfect destination to seek out for nature photography. There's a viewing deck near the falls that makes it easy to get a great photo, as well as a nearby trail that allows you to capture images from various angles.

Mill Creek Park

123 McKinley Ave., Youngstown, OH 44509

Did you know that Ohio is home to the second-largest metropark in the United States, behind only Central Park in New York City? Mill Creek Park covers more than 2,500 acres, with a diverse selection of attractions located within park borders. There are beautiful gardens, lush wetlands, waterfront scenery, historic structures, and so much more to capture. Spend your day near the historic Lanterman's Mill, the Fellows Riverside Gardens, or the Ford Nature Center. The D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center is the ideal place to start your journey at Mill Creek Park.

Topiary Park

480 E. Town St., Columbus, OH 43215

If you love art just as much as you love nature, then the Topiary Park in Columbus is one destination on our list that you definitely won't want to miss. It's home to one of the world's largest, most impressive topiary gardens, with 80 perfectly maintained life-size topiaries. The topiaries are laid out in a way that recreates a painting from the post-Impressionist era painter Georges Seurat.

Historic Clifton Mill

75 Water St., Clifton, OH 45316

Located less than an hour west of Columbus, you'll find the idyllic, natural setting of Historic Clifton Mill. Home to one of the few working grist mills in Ohio, Historic Clifton Mill is a great destination for blending nature and historical photography. The mill itself is a beautiful structure, which has been preserved to look and work just as it did during its heyday. The natural woodlands, serene creek, and gently flowing waterfalls surrounding the mill provide endless opportunities for capturing the perfect photo.

Schnormeier Gardens

8701 Laymon Rd., Gambier, OH 43022

With more than 50 acres of beautifully manicured gardens to explore, Schnormeir Gardens will keep you coming back again and again for nature photography. Many of the gardens here were created in the Chinese and Japanese styles, with abundant water features blending in with natural scenery. There are lakes, waterfalls, streams, woodlands, bridges, and beautiful, exotic plants to discover. Spring and summer are ideal times to visit for photography, with so many of the plants within the gardens in full bloom.

Loveland Castle

12075 Shore Dr., Loveland, OH 45140

Part historic landmark, part tribute to an order of knights, Loveland Castle is unlike any other destination on our list. It is, after all, a castle that looks like it was plucked straight from the medieval era and dropped into modern-day Ohio. The castle itself is more than worthy of some dedicated time with the camera, and the natural beauty around Loveland Castle makes this a fun destination for nature photography. While you're there, check out the on-site museum to learn more about how and why a stone castle was built in the 1920s around the corner from Cincinnati.

Serpent Mound Historical Site

3850 OH-73, Peebles, OH 45660

Here's another truly unique destination with a history that stretches back thousands of years to a time when Ohio looked very different than it does today. The Serpent Mound was built by the Adena tribe of Native Americans who called the area home thousands of years ago, stretching for 1,300 feet and built in the shape of a serpent. It's the largest effigy mound of its kind in the world and still stands out among the wooded, hilly landscape even after thousands of years. So if you want to capture something unique to Ohio which can't be found anywhere else, this is the perfect place to find it.

Krohn Conservatory

1501 Eden Park Dr., Cincinnati, OH 45202

The Cincinnati area is also home to some more conventional locations for nature photography, including some like the Krohn Conservatory, which doesn't even require you to leave the city. Created in 1933, the Krohn Conservatory is home to thousands of plants from around the world, with different "houses" holding plants from different parts of the world. The Palm House replicates a tropical rainforest environment, while the Desert House is attuned to plants that thrive in an arid, hot landscape with minimal rainfall. The Krohn Conservatory is also home to the Orchid House, which showcases orchids from all around the world, and the John Carroll Bonsai Gallery, which highlights the unique techniques used to grow bonsai trees.

Frame Your Next Ohio Adventure

These nine destinations are just the start of what you'll find in Ohio. From limestone caverns deep underground to the rolling, rustic landscape of Amish Country, there's so much to explore. What will you capture next?

Spend the Day on the Water - Explore Ohio - Cutler Real Estate

One of the many advantages of living in Ohio is the abundant natural resources and recreational opportunities available throughout the state. You'll find plenty of sparkling lakes where you can go boating, fishing, or swimming, and each has its own uniquely beautiful setting.

If you're looking to spend the day on the water near Northeast Ohio, Columbus, and Cincinnati, the following eight lakes are great destinations.

Portage Lakes

5031 Manchester Rd., Akron, OH 44319

Instead of representing just one lake, Portage Lakes is a system of eight lakes that encompass over 2,000 acres. They're very popular destinations throughout the year, with bass fishing in season and ice fishing in the winter. Two of the Portage Lakes, Rex Lake and Cottage Grove Lake, have a swimming area for boaters, and you can relax on a 900-foot public beach and swim at Turkeyfoot Lake. And when you're ready to take a break from your time out on the water and try some different activities, you'll find hiking trails and picnic areas surrounding the lakes.

Pymatuning Lake

6100 Pymatuning Lake Rd., Andover, OH 44003

Pymatuning Lake is Ohio's largest inland lake, covering just over 17,000 acres. Located on the Ohio/Pennsylvania state line, it's a popular destination for boaters, swimmers, and campers. And if you'd like to fish for walleye, this lake is the perfect destination. Near the causeway, you can enjoy a public swimming beach with amenities like changing facilities, showers, and restaurants, so it's a great place to go with the kids.

Mosquito Creek Lake

2961 Warren Meadville Rd., Cortland, OH 44410

A visit to Mosquito Creek Lake, located near Youngstown, offers plenty of water-based activities like boating and fishing. Crappie, walleye, bluegill, perch, bass, and flathead/channel catfish are abundant. Five launch ramps and boat rentals make fishing on the lake convenient. When you're ready to swim, head to the lake's public swimming beach, complete with a dog swimming area and roomy dog park attached.

Lake Hope

27331 OH-278, McArthur, OH 45651

About an hour's drive from Columbus, Lake Hope is situated in one of the state's most historic and scenic state parks. The area is rugged and beautiful, filled with steep gorges and narrow ridges. The lake is relatively small compared to some others in the state, but it's still ideal for boats, canoes, and rowboats. Stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) are offered on the lake, so you can learn a new skill as you take in the beautiful natural setting. If you'd like to swim, head toward the dam to locate a beach complete with a bathhouse with restrooms, showers, and changing booths, as well as a concession building.

Seneca Lake

22172 Park Rd., Senecaville, OH 43780

Ohio's third-largest inland lake, Seneca Lake is an extremely popular destination for boaters. You'll find ski boats, sailboats, pontoons, canoes, kayaks, jet skis, and other watercraft sharing the lake's 3,550 acres of water. You can even dock your watercraft at The Dockside Restaurant and enjoy a meal before heading back on the water. If you'd like to haul in some fish from the lake, you'll find many species in abundant supply, including crappie, bluegill, bullheads, and largemouth bass. A sandy swimming beach is also available, with a full concession stand on-site.

Tappan Lake

84000 Mallarnee Rd., Deersville, OH 44693

Fishermen and recreational boaters often flock to Tappan Lake's 2,131 acres. It's easily accessible from Stock and Franklin townships, with their roads bordering three long bays on the north side. If you like to fish from the shore, the lake is the perfect spot since it has 47 miles of shoreline, which is the most of any lake in the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District.

Caesar Creek Lake

8570 E. State Route 73, Waynesville, OH 45068

This large lake is just about an hour north of downtown Cincinnati, and it's the perfect spot to spend a day on the water. You'll find plenty of places to go boating, kayaking, and fishing, along with plenty of amenities like a marina, launch ramps, and dock rentals. Fishing for muskellunge draws many visitors to the lake, and it's known to offer some of the best crappie fishing in the state.

Harsha Lake

3294 Elklick Rd., Bethel, OH 45106

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mrs Lawson (@olivejuice2020)

Located about 25 miles from Cincinnati, Harsha Lake is often called East Fork Lake due to its location in East Fork State Park. Seven boating launch ramps are available, and plenty of fishermen head to the lake for crappie, bass, and bluegill. The large lake also has a 1,200-foot public beach and swimming area where you can go when you're ready to relax. If you'd like to enjoy a picnic, you'll also find plenty of areas around the lake where you have a bite to eat before heading back out on the boat.

Miami Whitewater Forest Lake

Mount Hope Road, Harrison, OH 45030

Located only about 30 miles from downtown Cincinnati, Miami Whitewater Forest Lake has a wide variety of watercraft to rent, so you can easily get out on the water. Choose from rowboats, pedal boats, kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, and motor and pontoon boats; pick up some fishing gear; and head out on the water. Several perfect picnic spots are situated around the lake when you're ready to take a break.

The highlight of these is the Albee Car, an impressive space featuring a full musical stage. This spot is home to the Queen City Sisters, a retro musical group singing songs from the period to complete the mood. By the time you step off the train at the end of the night, you'll feel as if you've gone back in time.

This format is a great way to see how well your companions work together as well as how well each of you works with other people. Some of these events are adult-only, while others accommodate teenage guests as well. Check out your options in advance if you plan to bring younger people to the show.

Cedar Point

1 Cedar Point Dr., Sandusky, OH 44870

The "Roller Coaster Capital of the World" is right here in Ohio on the shores of Lake Erie. But even if you're not a thrill-seeker, there's plenty to enjoy at Cedar Point, voted "Best Amusement Park in America" by readers of USA Today. In addition to more than 70 rides, the park features live entertainment, games, shops and restaurants, a water park, and a mile-long beach. It's a lot to cover in one day, so Hotel Breakers was also voted "Best Amusement Park Hotel." Get unlimited visits and free parking for only $99. Visit the website for schedule and pricing.

Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens

714 N. Portage Path, Akron, OH 44303

Unlike many historic homes, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens isn't named after a former owner. The estate was built in the early 1910s for Goodyear co-founder F.A. Seiberling and his family. "Stan Hywet" is actually an Old English term for "stone quarry," which was the most prominent natural feature of the grounds. Today, visitors can tour the stunning 65-room Tudor Revival Manor House along with the Gate Lodge, Corbin Conservatory, and the series of colorful gardens on the property. Hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Visit the website for pricing.

Put-in-Bay

Put-in-Bay, OH 43456

Put-in-Bay measures a scant 12.5 square miles in size, but it packs in more to do than many cities more than twice its size. The crown jewel of Lake Erie's Bass Islands is often referred to as the "Key West of the North." With a great mix of historic, cultural, and entertainment attractions, Put-in-Bay offers something for everyone. The island's most popular site is Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial, with its towering observation deck providing views of Lake Erie, Cleveland, Toledo, and Detroit. Cedar Bog Nature Preserve

980 Woodburn Rd., Urbana, OH 43078

Thousands of years went into the creation of Cedar Bog Nature Preserve. The 45 acres formed by retreating glaciers actually constitute a fen, which is a wetland that drains water, as opposed to a bog, which retains water. In addition to being designated as a National Natural Landmark, Cedar Bog has the highest ranking of any site in Ohio on the Floristic Diversity Index for its wide range of plants. Cedar Bog is also home to more than 40 endangered, threatened, and rare plants and animals. Nature Center hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday until October 31, but the boardwalk is open daily during daylight hours. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for ages 6-17.

Malabar Farm State Park

4050 Bromfield Rd., Lucas, OH 44843

Louis Bromfield was the classic local-boy-makes-good, becoming a Pulitzer Prize-winning author moving in the same circles as Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein. When Bromfield decided to reinvent himself as a farmer, he came home to create the eponymous estate that is now Malabar Farm State Park, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Tour the "Big House," which once hosted the wedding of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, and visit the adorable animals that live in the Main Barn. Other activities include hiking, fishing, and picnicking. Park hours are 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily and admission is free.

Historic Loveland Castle & Museum

12075 Shore Dr., Loveland, OH 45140

Travel back in time to medieval Europe with a visit to Historic Loveland Castle & Museum. This faithful replica of a 10th-century castle was intended to be the base of a group of Sunday school students taught by WWI vet Harry Delos Andrews. As a medieval warrior buff, Andrews dubbed the group, "Knights of the Golden Trail," and began construction on the castle for its 100+ members. After touring Loveland Castle and its display of medieval weapons, stroll the surrounding gardens and have a picnic lunch overlooking the Little Miami River. Hours are 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily through October 31. Admission is $5 with no charge for ages 5 and under.

Rabbit Hash General Store

10021 Lower River Rd., Rabbit Hash, KY 41005

Rabbit Hash is one of those classic slices of Americana where you might expect to see Sheriff Andy Taylor and his son Opie heading to the local fishing hole. The unincorporated community, which takes its name from a beloved local dish, has a population of just over 300 and the mayor is a French bulldog named Wilbur Beast. Visitors are drawn by Rabbit Hash's quirky charm and quaint downtown, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Rabbit Hash General Store, with its eclectic mix of merchandise and nostalgic feel, is the heart and soul of the community. Hours are 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily.

Small Town Shopping - Explore Ohio - Cutler Real Estate

Tired of the cookie-cutter big-box stores with limited selections, inflated prices, and impersonal service? Combine sightseeing and shopping with day trips to the wonderful small towns of Ohio, from Northeast Ohio to Columbus and Cincinnati, where the character and appeal of a traditional "downtown" is alive and well.

NORTHEAST OHIO

Medina

Founded in 1818, Medina was originally named "Mecca," which means, "a place to which many people are attracted." Residents and visitors agree that the town's friendly atmosphere and "Norman Rockwell" appearance make that an apt description. The charming town square, presided over by the beautiful brick courthouse, is surrounded by Victorian-style buildings that house a number of wonderful shops and restaurants. Support local causes by shopping at The Bookshelf, a used bookstore where all proceeds go to Project Learn, an adult literacy organization. You don't have to have a green thumb to visit the Gardener's Cottage, which offers a full assortment of furnishings, home accessories, seasonal decor, and gifts. Miss Molly's Tea Room and A Cupcake a Day have great treats to sit and enjoy or grab and go. The square, also known as Uptown Park, hosts regular community events such as Art in the Park and International Fest.

Chagrin Falls

From its picturesque name to the quaint, tree-lined streets, Chagrin Falls maintains a classic small-town feel in a 21st-century world. Noted cartoonist and Chagrin Falls native Bill Watterson featured a picture of his hometown on the back cover of The Essential Calvin and Hobbes Collection. With more than 75 independent shops and restaurants in the village center, you'll find anything you may need or want. The annual mid-summer Sidewalk Sale, featuring live music and kids' activities, has been a Chagrin Falls tradition for more than 70 years. Take a break from shopping to enjoy the view of the town's namesake falls from Bell Street Park, Riverside Park, or the Main Street bridge.

Berlin

Ever feel like technology is taking over your life? Step into a more relaxed way of life with a visit to Berlin. As the oldest existing village in Holmes County, Berlin is the center of the world's largest Amish community. The streets are lined with dozens of shops that carry one-of-a-kind items featuring high-quality craftsmanship. Spend an afternoon exploring Berlin Antique & Craft Malls, two side-by-side facilities where you'll also find the best fudge in the area. If that's not enough, check out Berlin Village Antique Mall, a two-story building filled with classic pieces and collectibles. Sample the cheese, produce, and all the bounty of Amish farms at German Village Market, Bunker Hill Cheese Chalet, and Troyer's Country Market. Don't miss Streb's General Store, where the third generation is running this classic shop.

COLUMBUS

Granville

If Granville reminds you of a town in New England, that's no coincidence. Settlers from the East Coast planned the Ohio community using familiar concepts from New England villages, right down to sharing the name of their original hometown in Massachusetts. Granville's layout follows the traditional grid pattern, with two major thoroughfares meeting in the center at the town square. Several original buildings, including churches, inns, and private homes, are still standing, with more than 100 listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The downtown business district, part of Granville's established historic area, includes boutiques such as Cedar and Thread, featuring clothing and home décor, and Green Velvet of Granville, a Parisian-style shop with an eclectic mix of merchandise. For a modern touch, stop for lunch or dinner at Three Tigers Brewing Company, a craft brewery and taproom that serves Vietnamese-inspired street food.

German Village

As its preservation society proudly proclaims, you don't have to live in German Village to feel like you belong. Located just south of downtown Columbus, German Village is the largest privately funded preservation district on the National Register of Historic Places. Though technically not a town, this neighborhood has gained worldwide recognition as a premier example of successful restoration, retaining much of the same character and appeal as it displayed during its origins in the mid-19th century. The Book Loft of German Village, housed in a pre-Civil War building that takes up an entire city block, is worth a visit all on its own. Other notable shops include Helen Winnemore's, a women's clothing store that originated in its namesake's home, and Vernacular, a clothing and lifestyle boutique that specializes in ethically sourced, organic, and minority-owned brands.

CINCINNATI

Yellow Springs

Earlier this year, travel website Only in Your State proclaimed Yellow Springs to be one of the coolest small towns in America, referring to it as a "little slice of paradise" based on its charm and originality. Just how cool is it? Comedian Dave Chappelle, whose father was a professor and dean of students at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, still lives here with his wife and three children on a 65-acre farm. Who can resist shops and restaurants such as The Smoking Octopus, a tobacco store located in a uniquely designed building, and Ha Ha Pizza, with its iconic mural featuring a jackalope, gremlin, flying saucer, and the Loch Ness Monster?

Loveland

Shopping is in Loveland's DNA. The town is named for James Loveland, who ran the general store and post office near the downtown railroad tracks. In the 1980s, the railroad corridor was converted to a bike trail that became part of the Little Miami Scenic Trail, which hosts nearly 750,000 hikers and bikers each year. Not surprisingly, Loveland has several shops, such as JackRabbit, Montgomery Cyclery, and Vertical Drop, specializing in clothing and outdoor activities equipment. If indoor pursuits are more your style, make stops at Busy Bee Boutique and Bond Furniture and Design.

Waynesville

With more than 60 shops and restaurants in a compact, five-block area, you can shop in Waynesville without fear of dropping. Want more credentials? Waynesville is known as the "Antiques Capital of the Midwest," and it has been recognized by USA Today as one of the "Most Walkable Towns in America." Waynesville Antique Mall, housed in a brick building built in 1882, includes nearly 50 vendors offering classic items, collectibles, and historical memorabilia. Don't miss Buckeye Charm, a family-owned retro boutique with an actual vintage truck as its centerpiece.

SMALLTOWN U.S.A.

Friendly residents? Fewer crowds? Good walkability? What's your favorite feature of small towns?
