The History of Wooster

John Beaver, William Henry, and Joseph Larwill established the town of Wooster in 1808, naming it in honor of David Wooster, an American Revolutionary War general and hero. The original county seat for Wayne County was in Madison, but moved to Wooster in 1811. The city experienced significant growth at a rapid pace, and in 1840, nearly 2,000 people resided in the town. Over the next several decades, the town grew even more, and the College of Wooster was established by the Presbyterian Church in 1868.

During the 20^th century, Wooster remained an important trade center for farmers in the area, exemplified in the town’s Research and Development Center for Agriculture. Many of the businesses in Wooster continue to manufacture items for the more rural residents in the county. Today, Wooster is the largest community in Wayne County.

Located approximately 50 miles south of Cleveland and 35 miles southwest of Akron, Wooster is the county seat of Wayne County.
