This area was originally comprised of three former communitiesāBethlehem, Rochester, and Navarreāeach with their own central square. Bethlehem was the oldest of the three, and was laid out in 1806 by Jonathan Condy, followed by Rochester to the west in 1833 by Nathan McGrew. Finally, Navarre was established in 1834 by James Duncan in the center of the three. In 1872, the three communities merged to become the Village of Navarre after a financial depression caused fierce competition between the three villages.
