During the 17th century, what is now known as Avon, Avon Lake, Bay Village, and Westlake were all considered one territory. The land was inhabited by a variety of Native American tribes, including the Wyandot, Ottawa, and Erie, who settled, traded, fought, and eventually moved elsewhere. In the 18th century, representatives of French and English colonial powers settled in the area and performed the same activities.
The township received its first permanent American settlers in the year 1814 from Montgomery County, NY—led by a man named Wilbur Cahoon. In 1818, the township was organized and named “Xeuma” then later “Troy Township.” And in 1824, Lorain County was created and the name was changed to Avon Township. A post office was established in 1825, and the township was incorporated as a village in 1917, becoming the Ccty of Avon in 1961.
