The History of Munroe Falls

The area that now makes up Munroe Falls was originally inhabited by various tribes of American Indians. The first settlers in the area arrived in 1809. Francis Kelsey built a sawmill on the south side of the Cuyahoga River and a gristmill on the north side, and the new village was originally called Kelsey’s Mills in Kelsey’s honor. The village experienced more growth, during which time the name was changed to Florence. Around 1836, William and Edmund Munroe arrived to the area from Boston and purchased the two working mills and 250 acres of land to lay out a new village, which they named Munroe Falls. The Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal, which passed through town, opened four years later. The village was officially incorporated in 1838 and became part of the new Summit County in 1840. It wasn’t until 1991 that Munroe Falls converted from a village into a city.

The Munroe Falls Town Center recently underwent renovation, which included rezoning, a river and amphitheater project, construction of a new commercial development, and much more. The town is divided east and west by Main Street, and the Cuyahoga River runs through the center of town.

Munroe Falls Metro Park encompasses 222 acres of land in the southeast region of Munroe Falls. The park includes a 13-acre swimming lake, scenic picnic areas, three open-air shelters, and more. Many visit the park for sledding and cross-country skiing in the winter, and hike along the two-mile Indian Springs Trail that loops through forests and past wetlands, ponds, streams and a spring.
