The Village of Uniontown was laid out in 1816. Due to the introduction of railroads, it became a center of commerce and industry. Its first general store opened in 1825, followed by a post office and a blacksmith shop a few years later. During this time, cabinetmakers, tanneries, hatters and foundries were rapidly increasing in number. The concentration of high-quality manufacturers gave Uniontown an exceptional reputation as a manufacturing hub long before the days of the Civil War. The first brick road in the area was constructed just before World War I, running between Greentown and Uniontown. The road, which was originally a State Route, is now maintained by the county and is known as Cleveland Avenue.
