The History of Florence

The area now known as Florence was originally called Crossroads, as it was the location of the convergence of roads from Burlington and Union. By 1821, the area was called Maddentown after Thomas Madden—a Covington attorney who owned and operated a farm in the area. When Madden moved away in 1828, the area was called Connersville after Jacob Conner, a settler who assumed responsibility for the growing town. It was finally renamed Florence because there was already a Connersville in Harrison County. There is no clear answer about why the name Florence was chosen, but it was presumably named after Florence, Italy. The town was incorporated in 1830 and grew rapidly after the construction of the Covington-Lexington Turnpike in 1836.

The town is renowned for its infamous water tower reading “Florence Y’all,” that is visible from I-71 and I-75. The tower was originally painted with the words “Florence Mall” to advertise an upcoming mall development. However, because the mall was not built yet, the tower violated highway restrictions and the city was forced to change the wording. Instead of repainting the whole tower, they decided to change the “M” to a “Y” and intended to eventually change it back once the mall was built. Instead, local residents embraced the new proclamation so the city decided to leave it as such.

It is the second-largest city in Northern Kentucky and one of the fastest-growing communities in the state.
